7 Golds, 6 Silvers and 8 Bronzes at the Bushido National Juniors

The Bath Chronicle Report:

24 young fighters from the Bath Judo Club Squad attended the Bushido national championships held at the High Wycombe Judo Centre and returned with 7 gold medals, 6 silver medals and 8 bronze.

The first competitor to fight was Basti Langkilde who won all his four fights including the final with Ippon to take the Gold medal in the under 25 kilo class.

In the next group, the under 30 kilo class, the Bath club lost the final match but finalist Lauri Mills took the Silver medal with club mates Sam James and Dan Zukas taking the two Bronze medals.

In the under 35 kilo section Ethan Hawtin won the Gold medal in record time, beating his four opponents with Ippons, his club mate Markos Constantinides put on a marvellous display to take the Bronze medal and stand on the rostrum with Ethan.

In the next weight category Ben Shardlow, competing in the under 40 kilo’s group, completely dominated this weight category and won every fight decisively to win the Gold medal, Remy Mills won the silver medal beating all his opponents with good throwing techniques, only losing to club mate Ben. Luke Martin Jones took the Bronze medal only losing agaist Ben and Lauri.

The under 45 kilo class saw two Bath club mates Orlando Glendenning and Rory Padkin in the same group, Rory Padkin won all his contests with excellent competitive skills to take the Gold medal most of his contests were over in 10 seconds or less, Orlando on his first outing for the club put up an excellent display of contest judo to take the bronze medal in this group.

The girls section also produced very good results for the Bath club. In the under 32 kilo section Krystal Langkilde produced some dramatic throws and solid holds to take the silver medal. In the under 36 kilo section, Anna Hawes won all her contests with devastating judo skills to take the Gold medal whilst club mate Sophia Calder Holt, not to be out done, contested with determination to take the Bronze medal in this section.

Olivia Lewis who won the Gold medal last year at these championships again proved that she is a top class player by winning the Gold medal in the under 40 kilo weight group.

Nine young fighters from the Bath Judo Club Squad attended the Junior section of the Bushido national championships held at the High Wycombe Judo Centre and returned with five gold medals, two silver medals, one bronze and one runners up medal. The first competitor to fight was Basti Langkilde who won all his fights except for the final one to take the Silver medal in the under 25 kilo class, his final contest was a very closely decided fight with the gold medallist club mate William Shardlow. William won all his fights with the maximum scores and his hardest contest was this final against Basti.

Daniel Zukas in his first outing for the Bath club competing in the 8 year olds under 30kilo’s group completely dominated this weight category and won every fight decisively to win the Gold medal. The under 30 kilo open class saw two Bath club mates Lauri Mills and Sam James in the same group, Lauri beat all his opponents with the maximum score of ippon to win the gold medal whilst club mate Sam put up a marvellous display to eventually take the bronze medal.

Ethan Hawtin who took the silver medal last year in the under 35 kilo group pulled out all the skills he has learnt to take the Gold medal this year winning every contest decisively, Jack Mousley also put up a spirited display to win a runners up medal in this group. Ben Shardlow, Ben Tidswell and Jonny Phillips also competed in this highly contested weight category and showed great determination and sportsmanship.

The girls categories saw Violetta Janes win all her contests through to the final in the girls under 40 kilo class where she showed excellent courage but lost on a small decision to take the silver medal. Olivia Lewis also on her first outing with school friend Violetta produced some of the best contests to easily win the under 36 kilo group and the gold medal.

Summer School & Olympic Anniversary Competition - 2013

The Bath Chronicle Report:

This year Bath Judo Club held an Olympic anniversary championship for the young judo players of the City and schools who are affiliated to it’s club. This championship was only possible due to the Bath club sponsoring the event. The championship was hosted by the Bath Judo clubs Martial Arts centre in Larkhall. The championship produced some very good attacking judo and the young people involved showed excellent technique and fighting skills.

This event has helped the club to see the standard of player that is being produced by the clubs many highly qualified coaches and it helps the coaches to plan the future training programmes for the City’s young people. Over 50 competitors took part and thoroughly enjoyed the thrill of competition, for many this was there first taste of Olympic style contests with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals being awarded.

Two girls Kristel Langkilde and Olivia Lewis won medals in the mixed groups competing against boys. These two girls showed excellent skills in this martial art to win a number of contests to put themselves into medal positions.

The competition was arranged by age bands and this produced some wonderful techniques from the young people.

16 Years and under:- Gold. Ethan Foster. Silver. Rory Murchison. Bronze. Harry Baird.

The Bath judo club has classes to suit all abilities from the complete beginner to the advanced player and specialises in self defence lessons for it’s members. Children and Adult classes are available. Classes are held at The Bath Judo Centre, Larkhall Monday and Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. 5 Golds at the Bushido Nation Juniors

Eleven young fighters from the Bath Judo Club Squad attended the Bushido national championships held at the High Wycombe Judo Centre and returned with five gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze. The first competitor to fight was Ethan Hawtin who won all his fights except for the final one to take the Silver medal in the under 30 kilo class, his final contest was a very closely decided fight with the gold medallist only winning on a split decision, Ethan also won the silver medal in this class last year, his club mate Ben Shardlow in his first outing for the Bath club competing in the under 35 kilo’s group completely dominated this weight category and won every fight decisively to win the Gold medal, The under 40 kilo class saw four Bath club mates Matthew Pierce, Matthew Hooper, Jonny Phillips and Rory Padkin in the same group, Jonny, and the two Matthews all won two contests each which was a good result for them as they are relatively new to competition judo but Rory Padkin won all his contests with excellent competitive skills to take the Gold medal. The under 45 kilo group saw Oliver Jenkins on his second outing for the club won a Bronze medal, Oliver was most unlucky not to be in the final losing by the smallest of decisions to the eventual winner.

Timothy Clark produced some sparkling throws to win the Gold medal in the under 50 kilo division, the spectators were in awe at the speed of his throws, last year he won the Gold medal in the weight below this one the under 45 kilo group.

The under 55 kilo group saw Harry Baird on his first competition for the club put on an excellent display of competitive judo to take the Silver medal after losing the final by the smallest of scores.

The under 60 category was an outright win by Elliott Hawtin who threw his first opponent in six seconds and his next contest was the same beating this opponent also in six seconds all his other contests were won in quick time and the final was another easy match for him as he took the Gold medal.

Jamie Padkin another of the clubs top fighters also won the under 65 kilo group, his first fight was won with a wonderful throw in under six seconds and his second contest won in four seconds the next two fights were also won in quick time and the final for the gold medal was won by him in under one minute.

Josh makes it a Magnificent 7!!!

Bath Judo club member Joshua Gay from Newton St Lowe won the coveted black belt at a national grading held at the High Wycombe Judo Centre. He also won the silver medal on the same day in the kyu grade cup at under 73kilos in the High Wycombe national open championship.

The High Wycombe centre caters for national promotions, national championships and squad selections and is one of the centre of excellences for the sport of judo.

Joshua won the championship contests with very fast skilful judo techniques that he has honed to competition level at the Bath judo centre while practising with his twin brother who won his black belt in July of this year.

Joshua Gay and his brother William have both come up through the junior ranks at the club starting from the age of 8 years and they are now 18, Joshua beat all his adult opponents with the maximum score of ippon showing a tremendous variation in skills to beat all his opponents with decisive moves to accumulate the wins needed to complete the contest section of the grading. Joshua then had to demonstrate a variety of throws, strangles, pinning holds and armlocks from the theory section which contains about 80 moves.

This brings to date the total of 7 players from the club achieving Dan grade a in little over 6 months. You can see all of them on the clubs Role of Honour!

Matt & Jonathan Get Their Black Belts

Two Bath Judo club members Jonathon Coe and Matthew Longshaw won their black belts at a national grading held at the Budokwai in London. The Budokwai is the oldest judo club in Europe and has been the centre of excellence for the sport of judo for nearly 100 years.

Both Bath club members beat all their six opponents who were the same grades as themselves and also going for the coveted judo black belts, by the ippon scores which are the maximum scores in judo. Matthew won all his contests with very fast skilful throwing techniques. This was a great achievement for Matthew who came up through the junior ranks of the club.

Jonathon Coe beat all his adult opponents also with the maximum score of ippon. He showed a tremendous variation in skills by arm locking one opponent and then getting a submission with a strangulation technique on another opponent before throwing the others with decisive moves to accumulate the wins needed to complete the contest section of the grading. The two fighters then had to demonstrate a variety of throws, strangles, pinning holds and armlocks from the theory section which contains about 80 moves.

Senior coaches Peter Thatcher and Andy Knapp were extremely pleased with the results these two students attained.

Bath Judo Club Junior Olympic Competition

The Bath Judo Club competition this summer was the Bath Junior Judo Olympics for young members of their club and school classes at the Bath Judo Centre in Larkhall. Bath.

Peter Thatcher the senior coach organised the event and had many of his Black belts to supervise the fighters. Mike Samson a 6th Dan was one of the senior referees along with ex-Commonwealth champion Jason Picton.

The girls section of the event showed the coaches that the skill level was of a very high standard. Olivia lewis won all her contests with skills very similar to those used by the female section of our medal winners in the Olympic games. Violetta Janes who won the silver medal and Hannah Reeves put up a very spirited show Eve Deshon who was on her first competition tried very hard to secure the wins necessary to medal but against higher grades and fighters who had more experience found it difficult to break through their defences. She was a very determined and courageous contestant who should soon attain higher grades in the sport.

Ivor gets his Black Belt

Report to follow but just to say it was an outstanding performance by Ivor!

Ivor Hawtin a 45 year old member of the Bath Judo Club won his black belt at a national grading held at the Budokwai in London. The Budokwai is the oldest judo club in Europe and has been the centre of excellence for the sport of judo for nearly 100 years.

Ivor the father of three young children who also practise Judo at the Bath club beat all his five opponents who were the same grade as himself and also going for the coveted judo black belt by ippon scores which are the maximum score in judo. Ivor won all these contests with a tremendous variation in the skills of throwing and groundwork techniques. This was a great achievement for Ivor who has only been doing judo for two years. He then went on to demonstrate a variety of throws, strangles, pinning holds and arm locks from the eighty moves in the theory section.

Senior coaches Andy Knapp and Peter Thatcher were extremely pleased with the result Ivor achieved.. They are both in the picture below congratulating Ivor on this achievement.

Craig & Will get their Black Belts!

Two Bath Judo club members won their black belts at a national grading held at the Budokwai in London. The Budokwai is the oldest judo club in Europe and has been the centre of excellence for the sport of judo for nearly 100 years.

Craig Hiscott a local Bath professional tennis coach beat all his six opponents who were the same grade as himself and also going for the coveted judo black belt by an ippon score which is the maximum score in judo. Craig won all these contests with very fast skilful throwing techniques. This was a great achievement for Craig who has only been doing judo for two years.

William Gay from Newton St Lowe who has come up through the junior ranks at the club from the age of 8 years and is now 17 beat all his adult opponents also with the maximum score of ippon. He showed a tremendous variation in skills by armlocking one opponent and then getting a submission with a strangulation technique on another opponent before throwing the others with decisive moves to accumulate the wins needed to complete the contest section of the grading. William and Craig then had to demonstrate a variety of throws, strangles, pinning holds and armlocks from the theory section which contains about 80 moves.

Junior Grading March 2012

The Bath Chronicle Report:

The Easter grading of the British Judo Society was held at the Bath Judo Centre in Larkhall, Bath and over 60 young people were promoted to higher grades. The club has pre junior grades for beginners and the following children were promoted to the Purple and White belt:- Sam Chippet, Jamie Dale, Christopher Donovan, Bruno Foulstone, Ashley French, Orlando Glendenning, Naomi Hansard, Ben Tidswell, Matthew Pearce, Matthew Neilson Cave.

The next group to be promoted were the Purple belts:- Al Rawi Ala’a, Archie Foster, Arthur Foulstone, Laurie Mills, Louis Moore.

The Red belt promotions were Theo Marvin, Jack Mousley, Talia Thomas. Lydia Graham won all her contests to attain a Yellow belt whilst Christopher Ashton, Daniel Graham, James Hearne and Yuui Heya won many contests with excellent throwing and groundwork skills to receive the Orange belt grade.

In the older junior section Ewan Tabram produced many very good competitive techniques to win his Blue belt whilst club mate Elliott Hawtin excelled himself with six maximum point wins against six opponents in a very short time to show the examiners that he was also worth a Blue belt.

Jamie Padkin convinced the examiners that he should be promoted to a junior Brown belt by fighting against senior brown belts who he equalled in skill, strength, speed and technique.

Senior coaches Peter Thatcher, Margaret Thatcher and Andy Knapp were extremely pleased with the results that their students attained.

Pete Wins BBC Unsung Hero...

The Bath Chronicle Report:

Congratulations to Pete for winning the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Unsung Hero Award 2011. David Passmore from BBC Points West visited the judo club on Saturday morning (19/11/11) to film Pete in action teaching the children. Pete knew he had been nominated for the award and was one of the main contenders but the look of suprize on his face at actually being awarded the prize for the whole of the South West was a picture to behold!!!

Pete will now be put forward for the National prize; so we may even see him on the BBC Sport Personality of the Year show on the 22nd December!! Fingers crossed for the next few weeks please.

I'm sure Pete won't mind me thanking, on his behalf, all the kind words of support from the parents present and particularly to Lisa & Ivor, Alex and Felicity for all their hard work in highlighting to the award committee why Pete is such a deserved recipient of this award.
